Leap Day

It's February 29, today. Leap day. Upon checking Facebook this morning, I was encouraged to do something extraordinary today. This day only comes once every four years. Parents of small children everywhere are struggling with how to explain why February has an extra day this year. Upon checking Facebook this morning, I was encouraged to do something extraordinary today because it's a special day.

I got thinking about this story in Acts 3:

Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple. Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms. And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. And leaping up he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God, and recognized him as the one who sat at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, asking for alms. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

At this point, Jesus sent his disciples out into the world with the power of the Holy Spirit within them. They had authority to heal and authority over demons. These men were confident and courageous as they went about healing and sharing the Gospel. Many would end up put to death for their new found vocation but for now they went on their way revolutionizing the way folks found their way to God.

I'd say these guys were living out Leap Day every day. Imagine helping someone and bringing them so much joy that they would leap and dance! They didn't just bring these people physical healing but assurance of eternal life. The social and political climate of the era was as tumultuous as ours, everyone was looking for something to leap about.

We are making our way toward's Jesus' triumphant entry - Palm Sunday. A week later, we will remember His betrayal, crucifixion and celebrate the Resurrection. I'd say we all can stand up and leap for joy! Jesus did something extraordinary for every human on the planet and we don't have to do anything to repay Him. Be like the man at the Beautiful Gate, fix your attention and believe.
