How we see ourselves matters. How God sees us matters more. There are giants in our land. The very land we were meant to possess. And more often than not, we spend too much time comparing our weakness, size and capability to the giants instead of focusing on God's promises.
In Numbers 13, God tells Moses directly, "Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel..." (Emphasis mine) There were no maybes or ifs...He said, "I am giving it to them!" I love to hear some promises like that. "Your tax refund will be this...you do not owe this bill...we are offering you this job..." I know my kids love it when I tell them exactly what we are going to do and especially when it's a real treat like ice cream or their favorite restaurant. God feels the same way about His children.
But these spies went out and saw some things that made them uneasy. There were several clans of people who had historically caused them trouble. There were thugs and giants. These unsettling things overshadowed the great things like milk, honey and bountiful fruit. Upon their return, they even brought back the beatiful fruit of the land. That beautiful fruit was soured by a bad report.
The final words of these spies was "we seemed to ourselves as grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them." (Numbers 13:33) At first, I read this and say to myself, "What wimps! God told you about thirty verses ago He was going to give you the land. Why don't you believe Him?" And then I sit there. And I sit. And I say, "Yeah, why don't I believe Him?"
Instead of focusing on how small we are how big our troubles are, we need to focus on God's word and His promises. Joshuah 1:9 says, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." What a promise! The God of the Universe will be with me? No matter what?
How about this one? John 14:1-3 "Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, that where I am you may be also." Wow! This isn't like some great rennovation on HGTV we wish we could live in but know we will never step foot in. It's God's house and we get to go! I can deal with difficulty when I know the outcome.
So what are your giants? Debt, lay-offs, divorce, addiction, legal troubles, your health or a wayward child? Your giants will see you like a little grasshopper if you focus on how small you are. Instead, tell your giants what an awesome God and Savior you have and if He could overcome the world, you can too! Watch those giants shrink back. The world will see you face your battles with awe and wonder.
Now go, and possess what the Lord has given you.
